Articles/Photo history

The Pulitzer Prizes, founded in 1917 through the will of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, are annual awards presented by Columbia University in New York. They honor achievements in journalism, literature, and the arts across the United States.

The Kiss of Life - Pulitzer Prize in 1968

In 1968, photographer Rocco Morabito took a drive through Jacksonville, Florida, when he saw an electric company lineman hanging unconscious from a utility pole after being electrocuted. He quickly took a photo before calling for help. Another lineman climbed up to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and Morabito captured this life-saving moment.
