The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas in 1963 shocked the world, and the subsequent killing of his assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was another unforgettable moment. Robert Hill Jackson, a photographer for the Dallas Times Herald, was in the Dallas police and court building’s basement to cover Oswald's transfer.

Jackson also readied his camera's flash before looking into his camera's view finder to see Oswald approaching.

Jackson said, "He (Ruby) fired his gun, and I hit the shutter".

Jackson almost lost his camera in the scrum that followed the shooting; an officer grabbed the camera but Jackson held firm.

Despite having a partially obstructed view, Jackson managed to photograph nightclub owner Jack Ruby shooting Oswald at the perfect moment. This iconic image, which became a symbol of the nation's turmoil, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1964.
